Hi, we've decided to go to London for a variety of reasons. What other city would you go to with 2 kids, 8 and 12? We want to go to 2 cities. Personally, we love the big showstoppers, like London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Florence. But we've never traveled to any of these with kids.

I would do London and Paris. I love Italy, but if you're in a time crunch and the budget is tight, fly into London, take the train the Paris and fly out of Paris.

Ask the kids. They know how to research things on the internet. Added bonus -- it's their own fault if they don't like it.

Definitely ask the kids. Also think about things that interest them. Is either one really into a novel set in any of those cities? Did either kids recently study a city that really caught their imagination?

Good ideas. Will ask them, but not sure they know enough yet to really say.

I think London and Paris are good to do with children.

I have no kids, but when I was a kid, London's Trooping of the Colors, Changing of the Guard, and the Tower were fascinating to me. As was having a proper lunch or breakfast on a train. And seeing London Bridge (which sadly now rests in Lake Havasu, AZ). As an American kid, the age of buildings in England amazed me.

Were it me, I would seriously consider staying in England. Take a train trip somewhere, stay in a REAL B&B (not at all like the cutesy, expensive American version). Go see some castles. Don't rent a car.

Otherwise, ask the kids.

Lisbon is quite nice (as is a short cheap flight away from London), then you could drive to Madrid (for example) and fly back to London. I know that's three cities but two of them are fairly close.

Girls? or Boys? My girls loved Venice. The tiny shops, winding pathways and vaparettos won them over. But if you throw boys into the mix I'd suggest Rome. You have history and gladiators but still Italian food and gelato.

What do the kids like to do? My kid loved museums, especially ones with dinosaurs and mummies. He liked old castles and armour and hiking in the mountains. Scotland, London, and Paris worked well.

If your kids want to go to the beach, I suggest Hawaii instead. If they don't like anything but tv and video games, save your money and leave them at home.

If you are taking young kids, the vacation pretty much has to revolve around whatever it is that the kids like to do.
