I often consult MapQuest and similar sites for driving distances. While accurate, such sites give the fastest route, not the shortest. Anyone know of an "as the crow flies" site that gives the shortest route, even though it may mean driving an secondary roads?

I have had really good luck with Waze which is available on the Apple and Android platforms.
Do realize that when you use these programs, they will NOT direct you the way you think that you should go. They direct you over all kinds of backroads to avoid traffic and the lights. This can be pretty disconcerting until you get used to it.
Waze really seems to be a drain on your cell phone's battery so make sure that you have a phone charger in the car with you.
Seriously though, your request is an available option on most mapping sites (google, bing, etc) and can actually even be found on mapquest!! Just look under the "Optimize your route" option and select either shortest time or shortest distance.

Tried to get used to Waze but gave up for basically one (well, two) reason: it constantly suggested routes involving left turns against major traffic (and no traffic light) and similarly also suggested routes that required cutting across multiple lanes of traffic in a very short distance to make a particular turn.

I always use Google Maps. Unless you are going down the street (in which case why would you even need directions) it gives you the route with the shortest time, and also a second with the shortest distance, and usually gives you a third, sometimes a combination of #1 & #2. Also, you can "flex" your directions, so if all 3 send you on a road that has construction or has terrible traffic, you can alleviate that problem, and manually alter the route you travel.
