Before they came out with smartphones I would take my dumb phone to the UK and just buy a UK sim card and prepaid minutes. I would then have a UK phone number. When I got home I'd put the American sim card back in.
I needed to make phone calls in the UK--at the airport, to relatives to tell them I was coming, to the car rental, to hotels for reservations, to places I wanted to visit to see if they were open, etc.
Now, with a smartphone you can do more. In the UK they don't allow those huge billboards that advertise motels so you either need some kind of a book or a brochure that lists the motels OR you can just look them up on your smartphone.
Most motels in the UK have wifi so you can use your smartphone there too. And--the camera comes in handy of course.
Well, you certainly need it upon your return...so, yes I take it. I also have apps downloaded of city maps for my favorite cities, metro schedules, travel sites for events...There are tons of things you could use it for, just he same as here! Ex. discounts, reservations, transportation arrangements. The list is endless. Europe has been a leader in mobile communications and they are just as (if not more, I say more) attached to cell phones.
Don't forget your charger AND the adapter for electrical outlets!
This week I had to buy 4 SIM cards, spent far more on cellphone than I did on food.
Damn
