I traveled last December and January this year too and I know Atlanta airport can be very busy in the mornings, so I prepare for a long wait in line and at times it would be 30-45 mins. But what Ive seen recently at ATL and many big airports nationwide is insane, you can help but think the TSA is trying to make some sort of statement in regards to budget cuts. Closing 1-2 lanes shouldnt make your wait time be 3-4 times as long and closing the Precheck line is spiteful since many people paid for that service to get through quicker.
Many times when employees want to make a statement, they usually stick it to someone good, customer or the company. American Airlines a few years ago was having labor problems and it came out that many of their flights were being delayed by the staff for mechanical issues for small things like a broken coffee pot even though the plane had 3-4 more, but it was all to make a statement and get back at the airlines during the labor dispute. In the same manner I wonder if the TSA is deliberately understaffing to back the lines out the airport to try to get more funding or show congress up. With the media on their behind and many cities threatening to replace the TSA, all of a sudden with a bit of OT for the workers, the TSA lines are back to normal.
Conspiracy nonsense, some low level employee trying to muck things up with missing coffee pots for direct benefit (better negotiated compensation) is quite different than a massive organization trying to show up congress.
The speed of processing travelers at any major airport in other part of the world isn’t much better (if at all) than here in the states. Large numbers of people and too few employees to check baggage. We generally get what we pay for and no one wants to pay for the services. The employees are just like everyone else,,,, they can be overworked at times and things slow down without some help now and then.
I honestly think we need to go back to metal detectors only to speed things up. If you happen to be on that 1 in 1 million flight that get attacked, its just your time to go.
The TSA have probably stopped some attacks, but in reality they only adjust to failed attacks, as to why we have to take off our shoes and go through these body scanners, etc. There is nothing the TSA can do to stop someone that really wants to do something vindictive.
With all these extra long lines, they might actually be inviting themselves for an attack on people waiting in the security lines if the terrorist feel they wont ever make it through the checkpoint. In the end, the fear of flying or going to the airport will still be there.
I once saw 2 lanes open at ATL main checkpoint and it required 9 TSA workers to do so.
