I'm in a pretty good spot... I have a job lined up for me that starts at the end of August, so I have 2 and a half months to do whatever I want. I've been thinking of doing some traveling/backpacking. Here are a few options for me this summer:
1.) Get a summer job in my hometown for a bit... or if I don't get one, just hang out and wait for the time to pass.
2.) Do some WOOFing in other countries/towns (not sure if it's too late for that)
3.) Do a bit of backpacking in Europe and/or Asia and/or South America
4.) Do an easier and probably cheaper trip and visit a few cities in America that I've never been to but always wanted to check out.
5.) Do 3 and 4 but I probably don't have enough resources for that
6.) Write that great American novel/screenplay/play I've always wanted to write... lol yeah right... I can do that whenever/where ever
7.) Notify my workplace in August and see if I can start earlier
Any other ideas? What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Secondly.... If you are young ... Get an international job that pays you to travel. Asap
1) certain foreign jobs are tax exempt
2) will help your resume
3) will help you understand international trade and politics
4) will bring you in touch with well traveled friends
5) you will earn mileage and hotel points to keep you traveling
6) you may find another country or culture to embrace and do volunteer work
7) additional languages will serve you well
BTW,,,, do whatever possible to keep your USA wage earnings from feeding the government. While working for eages, you will not gain wealth. You need to plan and invest to do that. The irs has your wage earnings within their primary targets. You can work and earn, then invest, then retire early (age 35 -40) and then write ( with more depth of experience.)
I'd recommend heading to SE Asia for two months backpacking, hit the usual places in backpacker trail Thailand/Laos/Cambodia/etc. you'll see lots of cool stuff, eat lots of great, hopefully make some new friends, etc.
First of, no need to be QUITE so dramatic. Yes, 10 weeks is a stretch you likely won't see again, but it's not impossible - and many people take 4 week vacations. And if you change jobs again in the future that can be a good time for extended vacations. It's plenty of time to do Europe if you can find deals to stretch your budget. And if you're concerned about money, you can still take part of that time as a "staycation" and explore your area in a way you haven't before. Don't go to work sooner unless it is going to get you something major - brownie points or you can't survive without the paycheck.
Do some traveling in Europe and Asia. Take advantage of all this free time while you are still young, healthy, and childless.
If you can afford it, I would recommend 5 weeks in Europe and 4 in Asia. The last week, I'd spend at home recovering and preparing for my new job.
If you cannot afford to travel for 9 weeks, at least go away for 4 weeks. This is the best time of your life to travel.
