Do me a favor and check out your old thread about birthday while in London - I'm going for my bday in August and would love your insights even though we seem to have different likes/dislikes when it comes to city travel.
I'll do that for you Thursday for sure, toosie, as I don't have time today and won't tomorrow either.
And thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I'll get back to them on Thursday as well.
Do you want to stay in cities or are you open to a driving tour that might include some countryside? They can be less expensive (even with the car rental factored in) and can obviously expose you to a lot more variety than staying inside cities.
Also, what time of year would this be? If you've already said, apologies.
For mid-sized places that you could investigate, I'd look at two in France, Strasbourg and Annecy. Strasbourg is beautiful, the Alsatian food is marvelous, and the small villages in the vineyard country surrounding it are extremely picturesque.
Annecy is on the edge of the French Alps, set at the head of a gorgeous lake surrounded by mountains. (Mont Blanc isn't very far away.) The town is very picturesque, the countryside around it breathtaking, and if you want to pop into Geneva for a day of sightseeing (UN buildings, beautiful Lake Geneva waterfront, etc.) - it's an easy drive from Annecy. Bring money.
Have you heard of the Isle of Man? Probably not if you are not into TT race.
It's not a must-see place but very relaxing and picturesque.
I'd heard of it, but didn't know a thing about it until I googled for pictures of it. OMG! We spent the entire month of September, 2015 traveling throughout Great Britain and missed this? How could we have done something so stupid?
In that region of Europe how about Budapest or Munich? Both are great but between the two I'd pick Budapest first.
I do love Munich, but have been there twice already and will probably opt to skip it this time around. Budapest is sounding really, really good, though.
I loved Madrid - not for the city on its own ( that is great too) but the wonderful little towns less than a couple of hours away from it - Segovia, Avila, El Escorial, Toledo, Cuenca and so on.
We've been to Madrid, but some of the smaller Spanish towns might be a good option.
Given the likes and dislikes you expressed, I came here to recommend Prague for you. I'd also consider Kraków, Poland.
I disagree strongly with recommending Budapest for you - too big and dirty and not at all quaint or gentle. I adored Vienna and loved Budapest even more.
Really? Well, I do appreciate an opposing opinion. Maybe I ought to do more research on Budapest before settling on it.

Did not especially enjoy the experience in Venice or Prague.
The thing about Venice, it seems to me, is that people almost always either love it or hate it. Nobody's luke warm on Venice. Me? It's my favorite city I've ever visited.

Nice suggestions! Sure, we're open to staying in the countryside, too. On our recent trip to Great Britain, we stayed in places as dissimilar as a hotel in London and a farmhouse B&B in the Lake District. I will definitely look into Annecy and Strasbourg. I have spent very little time in France so that might be a good option.
Aix la chapelle- France
