But I'm open to other non-outdoors ideas too.
Putz around town? Why go to Vegas when you don't want to participate in anything the area has to offer?

Solo travel is amazing! I'm a woman, but I went to Cancun solo, and I have a trip to Punta Cana, DR planned for December. Solo, of course.

I'm also trying to go to Europe solo.

For the record, I have a terrible sense of direction. Driving a golf cart, I got lost in Isla Mujeres...which is an island with one main road. :P So, I wouldn't let that stop me...I can't!

Who are these mythical judges that determine if something is "okay" or "pathetic"? That's right...they don't exist.

I've traveled within the States and to foreign countries solo. It's energizing and I've always had a great time just
seeing a different part of the country or world. Enjoy your trip to LV!

Vegas is a blast solo!

I was there for several days by myself and had so much fun!

You will not be solo long!

I'm a female who has traveled to Vegas alone and I am not a gambler.
Things to do:
1. Go see all the Hotels on the strip (not in one day); each one more fabulous the next
2. Rent a car and drive to Hoover dam. On the way back, stop at Lake Meade and rent a wave runner for an hour of blissful fun.
3. Drive to Red Rock Canyon Park at the edge of town, then stop at the RR casino for refreshments. You get to see the city as you drive through town to get there.
4. Go check out the top 5 night clubs, buy a pretty girl a drink. Women are dressed to kill in Vegas. If not a clubber, there are nice lounges and entertainments in the casinos for free, like at MGM Grand.
Have fun!

Well it might seem or feel odd going to Vegas alone, but it does put you in a position to meet a lot of new people (if you choose to). And who cares what people think, they probably won't even notice or could care less if someone is alone, in a group, coupled up or not - you just think they care. And even if they do care, so what, it's your trip and they're not paying for it! So enjoy yourself either way

All my close friends are coupled-up now, and I can only take so much hanging out as a 3rd/5th/7th wheel. Now, I've never been to Las Vegas, and want to check it out sometime before Labor Day. I've done solo cruising before (but not land travel), and had a totally freaking awesome time! Not just in terms of places, but also socially. I met new friends of varying ages within a day onboard, found women to dance with in the club, and more . So I have enough experience with solo cruising to know how fun it can be.

I realize that land travel is a whole different animal, especially a place like Las Vegas, which has been a haven for couples and groups since its early days. It was never planned with solo travelers in mind, with a possible exception of high rollers. (Unlike most cruise ships, where casinos are generally subpar, and the onboard atmosphere is very solo-friendly.) I still want to go to Las Vegas for a weekend getaway, just to say I've been there and maybe see the Stratosphere Tower. I guess I'll go solo if I have to. I already asked my single friends if they want to come with, but they can't go.

Anyway, what do people think of a 30-something man traveling to Las Vegas by himself? Are they "meh, whatever!" about it, or do they think he's pathetic for doing that? No platitudes, please.
You are way, way, way overthinking this. I'm a single male, around your age, and I've traveled to Las Vegas solo (many of those trips road trips from Denver) at least a dozen times-- it's like my annual pilgrimage ritual (hence the name, Vegas "pilgrim"). Stop being so judgmental about what others may or may not be thinking-- that's no way to live. Just go where you want to go and have fun. Heck, as many of the above posts have mentioned, there are tons of women who travel to Vegas solo... if they can do it, you as a dude certainly can too. As a single male, you will pretty much blend in with the crowd anywhere-- I mean unless if you are dressed out of the ordinary or have bright orange hair or something, no one will even bat an eye at you. There's really only one time of all the times I've been to LV solo when a comment was made about me traveling solo-- it was when I was at the pool at the Mirage (which is great, BTW), when some middle aged lady lounging on the chair next to mine noticed that I was alone and asked me some annoying [or at least I perceived it as such at the time] questions. I sure didn't let that ruin my trip... I've also had one time at the Flamingo when some drunk bros at the pool party were making fun of how pale and hairy I am... just laughed it off, ignored them and moved on. One thing's for sure, Vegas is full of people from all over the place and all walks of life. It's worth going there just for people watching if nothing else.

One of the best things about Vegas in the summer is the pool scene. Some hotels like the Hard Rock have raging pool parties all summer long. I personally prefer more quiet, relaxing pool atmosphere (like at the Mirage's main pool), but you can find just about all kinds of pool scenes to fit your style-- do some research before booking. Mandalay Bay for example has a full blown waterpark with a wave pool-- tons of fun. Definitely wear tons of sunscreen-- one of the biggest challenges to traveling solo is you don't have anybody to help rub sunscreen on your back. I burn easily and have learned to avoid being at the pool in the mid-day sun. The desert sun is absolutely intense. It's also really not wise to drink while outside in the heat (even though the pool bars sure are a lot of fun and everybody does it).

A few recommendations-- don't stay at the Stratosphere-- especially if you're not going to rent a car. It's a hum drum hotel in the middle of no man's land in a really sketchy area in between the strip and downtown. If you're trying to stay at a budget, it would be better to stay at a place like Flamingo, Harrah's, or Monte Carlo. On some trips when I was passing through Vegas for a day or two on my way to SoCal, I've also stayed at some off strip hotels before and drove up to the strip in my car. South Point is nice and caters to the LA crowd. But heck, if it's your first time in Vegas, forget all these off strip places; I would spend a little more and stay right in the middle of the strip at a place like the Mirage-- great location, great pool, nice casino, bars, and restaurants. Even if you don't gamble, be prepared to spend some money. Vegas is not cheap anymore like it was decades ago, but it's still a very enjoyable place to get away and have fun.

If you do rent a car-- even if just for a day (some hotels have mini car rental places right in the parking garage), you could explore around the area. A lot of people don't know that there is a 12,000 ft mountain (Mt Charleston) with a ski area (and nice alpine hiking trails in the summer) just 45 minutes from the Las Vegas strip. How cool would that be-- especially if you live in Chicago-- it's not like you get to see mountains every day. Lake Mead is also really cool (although would be awfully hot in the summer). Red Rock Canyon State Park is a gorgeous place as well just on the western outskirts of LV. If you really want to explore, you could get up super early and drive to Zion, Bryce Canyon, or the north Rim of the Grand Canyon (3-4 hour drive). You could stay one night in southern Utah or just do it as a day trip. Whatever you like to do, there is plenty to do in Vegas, alone or with a group.

I've enjoyed traveling solo. Why worry about what complete strangers think? Its none of their business. If you want to go, then go.
