Mid September we plan to drive from LA and drive on the coastal road. We are interested in Birding and I have heard a lot about Moro bay and thinking of stoping there.
Any advice about the drive, birding, easy trails, and where to stay. We are not on economy nor 5 star stay, somewhere with a view and clean, close or everything.
Btw we are retired and in the 60s and 70 s
Thank you.

yes, while in USA, always do coastal routes with coastline on your right side. MUCH safer, not crossing traffic at each stop / entrance.
Since you are over age 40, stay in hospitality guest homes. The hosts are probably birders too, and will fill you in on the good local spots. Food, lodging, safety, views... fabulous for last 25+ yrs. (and under $20 / night worldwide, used over 100 so far this yr. ) Hospitality exchange - Wikitravel
Thanks for all the suggestion. Yes we will be driving north with the sun behind us and the coast to our left!
We are most interested in birding, not big foodies although we avoid chain restaurants and enjoy food prepared with fresh ingredients.
I am looking a for a place to spend 2 nights on the Big Sur in a place that is also a nature preserve.
thanks
