I am finally going to be making my first trip to Africa next month! As it is, I have only a "dumb phone" that is not compatible overseas.
My hope is that many international trips will follow this one. I'd like to find a good pay as you go phone that I can use on my trips abroad. Verizon has rental phones but I would pay $2.99/minute used abroad.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd be willing to exchange this phone if there are any reasonable plans that I could use domestically as well as when traveling abroad.
TMobile has unlimited text and data plus $.20 a minute calls in 130 countries for no additional charge over your monthly bill. From experience, it's pretty much seamless in Japan, Costa Rica, France, UK, Italy and Switzerland. A little spotty in some parts of Canada. I could not tell you about Africa.
I use a Samsung S5 with tmobile. Tmobile has international unlimited data and text for many countries (as the poster above mentioned), and you can use data to make phone calls. I have used it in many countries in Europe, Ukraine, Russia, and central Asia just fine.
I have no idea about Africa, Africa is a big place, what country(s) specifically? From Tmobile website, the list for Africa is very small:

^^^^ This! I used this on my last trip overseas and enjoyed the excellent service. Call T-Mobile and find out the details for Africa.
Why renting? I'd just get a used Samsung S-Series or Iphone. Can't be that expensive if its not newest generation and at least can be used for Maps and all other services if Wifi is available.

I am sure you will or have found many suggestions here. However--I also have a phone/service that is not compatible overseas. And you know what? I am happy for that. I am happy for that for a week I can unhook from that phone that I have attached to me. If anyone needs me they can email me/skype me later when I am attached--oops, I mean hooked up to my laptop!
Most phones now have the global chip for international calling. We have Verizon and my husband and I both have droids. He travels all over for work and has not had a problem. However, he has never been to Africa. You would need to actually call or better yet, go to a local Verizon and ask them if the phones have the capability there. Regardless of who you go with the calling/texting will cost more.
