I just learned that UA is now decreasing the number of (free) checked-in luggage from 2 to 1. A 2nd piece of luggage can be checked in for $25 (same 50-lb. weight limit applies). Here are the details.

I wouldn't be surprised if the other airlines followed suit.

Would you prefer that they raise ticket prices?

At least this way you have 2 options to avoid paying
1) you can not take the flight
2) you can only check one bag

At least they still allow one free checked bag. Some airlines charge you for the first.

Now, if the major airlines start to follow Spirit Airlines and start charging for both checked bags and carry-on bags, then I would rather them just raise the price, since you would basically have to pay a fee no matter what.

No they don't. All bags have fees now. (Realize this thread is pretty old.)

This will work if it is too big for overhead and small enough to fit through security. TSA might not let it go past security if they don't think it can fit overhead either.
If it can be stored overhead, then why gate check it and have to wait 20 minutes at baggage claim?

TSA doesn't care about size, only content. Not their job.

If you gate check it, you get it back at the gate.
