It can also be used if you "Sea" in from:

Canada
Mexico
The Caribbean
Bermuda

For the OP, since you say you already have a regular passport book (and not the card), simply renew the passport before you go on your trip. By using the renewal form, DS-82, you will be able to save some money as opposed to ordering a new passport card and you'll likely get it back faster, too. Some cities have Passport offices where you can go in person with your paperwork, old passport, etc. but otherwise go to local post office, get the DS-82 renewal form and have them fill that out with you. With the 82 renewal form, you'll need to send in the old passport with the form, even if it is still valid, but within a year of expiring.
