So.. I purchased a ticket for my 16 year old nephew to ride the train from Anniston, AL to Greenville, SC in May..
Talked to his mother and asked if he had a school ID or something that's a photo ID.. Just to be safe. He doesn't. So.. I'm sending them out to get an ID card to cover the bases.
But.. Curious as to whether or not anyone has run into this situation before and what they think.
It states that anyone 18 and over needs to produce valid ID..
He is not 18.
It further states
Please note that unaccompanied children 16 - 17 must also produce valid photo ID when purchasing tickets, obtaining travel documents and checking baggage.
His ticket has been purchased for him.. There are no travel documents for him to obtain (E-ticket) and he will not be checking baggage.
So, based on all this.. There is nothing there that says he needs an ID.
Again, I'm making sure he gets one, just to be safe, but.. Curious as to what you all think..
I'll note as well.. I've directly asked this question to Amtrak.. Waiting on a response from them. Will update when I get one.
Yeah.. as I said, the plan is to get him a state ID from the DMV, just in case. If he doesn't need it.. Well, he has it and the only thing that i'm out is the $22 it costs and he and his mother are out a little time.

I've ridden several times and I can't recall ever showing ID, either.. but.. It's probably been since the late 90's (pre 9/11) that I rode.

Per Amtrak:
"Random Ticket/ID Checks
Following federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines, we regularly conduct random ticket verification checks onboard trains to ensure that passengers are properly ticketed. Please be prepared to show valid photo identification to a member of the onboard crew upon request."
I know when I go on the Amtrak, someone always comes by and scans your ticket and checks your ID.
Edit: Now I can not remember for the life of me if they asked for my ID with the ticket or just ask for the ticket.
