I'm traveling/moving from Greenville, SC to New Orleans, LA. It's a 14 or 15-hr. bus ride, or 9 hour car drive. If I take the bus, it's about $111.50, each way, with all taxes & fees included. About $223 total, round trip. If I rent a car from Enterprise...the smallest 1 is $25 per day. (Looks like now $40/day.) I don't have my own car or car insurance, so I have to buy THEIR insurance. Another $25 per day. So, about $50 per day for both insurance & car, & more money for additional fees & gas. If I rent the car, I plan to have it for 3 days.

I don't have patience to take the bus because I'm tired of rude bus drivers, poor customer service, & employees losing my luggage. But I'm kind of scared to rent a car because I only drove a little, within a span of 10 or more years. I still have my license & the skills to drive. I'm just scared because I haven't done a lot of driving. I rented a car & drove earlier this year, & did fine with driving in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was scary, but I made it.

Also, the Greyhound bus station is about an hour & 20 minute walk for me, from the nearest public transit bus stop with all my luggage, & the taxi drivers act like they don't trust picking people up from the Greyhound station or the airport. Also, the public transit buses don't even go near the airport. I'm in a quite complicated situation. The Amtrak is about 20 minutes walking distance from my house, but it costs $100 more for round trip than Greyhound. It looks like I have no other alternative, but to rent a car. I'm probably moving with no furniture, but if I take my bed, I may have to rent a cargo van. I'm thinking about taking my bed with me to move, but I'm not sure yet. Many people STILL suggest I take the Greyhound. I'm disabled & on fixed income. There's no way I can lug all my stuff to the Greyhound station, & the Greyhound station here in Greenville isn't even a 24-hour one. I think my stuff is too much for a small taxi. If I rent a car, it probably would have to be a full-size big one or an SUV if I don't take my bed, but if I DO take my bed, I would have to get a cargo van. Maybe a pickup truck.

If any of you had to be in my predicament, what would you do? Thanks for the advice, in advance.

You can fly from GSP-MSY for as low as $94 (with taxes and fees ~125ish) on southwest. With two bags included. (about 4hr trip with the connection)

For your "Stuff" I would look at getting one of the "Pod" type moving containers.

Also keep in mind many car rental are priced as return to same location, if you drop a SC car in New orleans there may (probably will be ) a several hundred dollar one way drop charge.

Sell everything of value and give away the rest beyond what will fit inside
the 2 or 3 boxes that an airline will allow. Then FLY there.

The problem is, I'm afraid I'm too overweight to fly, & fear having to pay for 2 seats, which I can't afford. I'm 5'2" & weigh 275, but I had been losing weight. I was bigger than that. Also, the same struggle with the Greyhound station is like with flying. With the plane, how would I get there? It's too far to walk. Yeah, the plane is even worse because I would have to WALK 4/12 hours. It's in a city, called Greer, SC, & no transit buses go to Greer. The Greyhound station is closer, but still too far to walk with my stuff.

An Uber Taxi from "Greer SC" to GSP will run $10-20 each way.

A 5'2 275# will fit in just about every airline seat, ALso based on the price of the ticket, my guess is the plane is not running very full and the seat next to you will be empty. If need be the Airport/Airline will arrange a wheel chair to get you to the gate, to your connection flight, from the Gate in MSY to the Curb or Bus at the airport (Tips to Wheelchair drivers 5 10 5)

You are only 20 minutes from Amtrak so that would save the Taxi cost and New Orleans has a good transit system. Do you have a place to stay yet? I don't understand the round trip reference since you say you are moving there?? How old are you and do you have anything like AAA which would save you some on Amtrak and probably the bus or airplane?

I am not that familiar with public transportation but suggest you look up where the Amtrak station is in New Orleans and if it is near where you will be staying. I have been on one bus ride and that was enough for me.

You said you have a disability? That may make a difference in your cost. I put that in for a Thursday and the cost was $139. That is not that much more than the bus fare you quoted. The day of the week you travel makes a difference too. Check out the website for other discounts such as students.

There was a choice of shipping your luggage too. I don't know enough about your circumstances to help you beyond the website. There are many options and choices on there.

Greer Airport is 15 miles from where I live here in Greenville, & I don't have a smart phone for Uber. I'm not trying to make any excuses. I'm just explaining the situation I'm in, & trying to seek advice. How much is Uber from Greenville to Greer Airport? I never took Uber before.

From the Amtrak Station (since you said you live near it) to the Airport Uber would be ~$25-30 (oneway)

You can book a uber from there web site now. Uber is "Cashless" you pay for it on your credit/debit card.

I didn't wanna tell too much detail, but I'll say it, so you can get a better understanding. OK. I'm first going down to New Orleans by June 20 for my Section 8 housing portability briefing, & then I'll come back here to Greenville. A week or a month later (not sure yet), I'm supposed to make my final move. So, that's 2 trips. 1 round trip for my meeting, & then 1 one-way trip for my final move. I figured I could rent a small car for the first trip, so I could build more driving confidence, & then for the final move, I could feel more comfortable driving the cargo van for the final move. I drove earlier this year & did fine. I don't know why I'm kind of scared. Someone I knew, I recently found out he died in a car accident, & I'm afraid because of that. Maybe my fear might be irrational. I don't know. Usually, I LOVE driving, but don't get to do it that much.

I have family in New Orleans. That's where I was born & raised. Where I'm originally from. I'm 33 & don't have my own car, & I don't have a credit card or AAA. In New Orleans, the Greyhound & Amtrak are both at the same station. I may or may not go stay by my sister. I'm not close with my family, so I may have to stay in a hostel or motel for the night.
