I think it's safe, as long as you don't do anything stupid and follow their laws. As crazy as their government is, I still don't think they will arbitrarily detain an American.
The world is quite large. Many places to see. North Korea would never make my list of places to go. I'll just read articles and look at pictures & videos on the internet. I'll visit North Korea vicariously through the computer.....if I ever decide to do so.

North Korea is almost certainly in the upper half of most dangerous countries for Americans to visit.
Hundreds (as far as a few seconds of Googling would tell me) of Americans visit Korea every year. Almost none of them have problems.
Let's assume it's safe to visit, what do you want to see?
N Korea doesn't have a lot of natural beauty to explore. Historic sites are scarce, architures are ugly, food isn't great. Maybe you are just curious about life in N Korea, but you are not allowed to leave the tour group and talk to locals.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but
If you want the retro totalitarian experience, stick with the former USSR -stans that have full diplomatic relations with the USA and in many cases are actively courting American business partnerships.
While there's no way I'd consider North Korea under current circumstances, I'm curious enough about places like Kazakhstan that I'd take a free trip there if offered. Because Astana looks pretty awesomely eccentric in a large scale way:
Have you ever read how the trip there works? It's not like you get to experience North Korea. You are stuck with guards all of the time, you're only allowed to visit a certain area and the hotel is on an Alcatraz type island so you can't wander around at night. The hotel often loses power/water.
Waste of time and money.
