Can you share the aspect of Ecuador that you don't like? I am curious why tons of American want to retire thefe.
Low cost of living and beautiful mountains.

America Favorite City: Cleveland is home, but probably tie between DC Metro and SF Metro
Mexico Favorite City: Merida (Have not been around a ton, but this one had historic appeal)

And why is that? You don't like history, nature, and food?
North to south, here are the better-known places I felt comfortable:
Newfoundland
North Dakota
St. Louis, Missouri
Cancun City (not beach), Mexico
Leon, Nicaragua
Panama (anywhere except Colon)
Medellin, Colombia
Merida, Venezuela (probably gone now)
Peru (many places, but I never went to Macchu, nor stayed in Lima)
Sucre and Tarija, Bolivia
Asuncion, Paraguay
Salto, Uruguay
Valpariaiso/Vina and Puerto Montt, Chile
Mendoza, Argentina
Aracaju, Brazil
JardÃn, Colombia. When living in MedellÃn we took a ton of two-nighter side trips to pueblos nearby, this was by far our favorite.
Jardin is nice and the drive up to it is nice. Should note that it's pretty touristy, nice to visit and look at but not really typical of a regular town.
