Cruising here during hurricane season is indeed taking a chance: wonderful when it works out, but troublesome when it doesn't.
Blue Willow - another post mentioned a cruise out of JAX. Just wanted to point out that it is the height of hurricane season, so you can get a good deal, but....it's risky. (Lived thru 2 fun filled hurricanes - reason enough to move to NM!) Given the choice, I agree with you- October is just too nice out here in NM to miss!

If you're looking for an outdoorsy kind of place, there's a guest ranch outside of Sonoita Arizona that has a GORGEOUS adobe building/house. It's called Crown C Ranch. The ranch house is huge -- holds up to 18 people. There's a pool on the property. Check out their website (I don't think I can post it.) It's located in SE Arizona and in August/September, the weather there is beautiful. Very different than other parts of Arizona. There is more rain in that area, so it's greener.

DH and I went on a birdwatching tour in 2001 and we stayed at the Crown C ranch. Because we were birding everyday, I don't know a lot about the other activities, but I know there's a lot to do in the area. We long to return to that part of the country. VERY different than what we expected. Tuscon is about an hour away and there's LOTS to do there, too.

Have a great time with your friends (and new friends!)
