Or a road atlas? I always do, because I love maps and could never switch to using GPS, except for urban driving. I love to make unplanned detours on the spur of the moment when driving on vacation, and using a map gives me a good overview of the areas around the road I'll be driving along.
I do. I'm old school and like to be able to hold a paper map in my hand and get the "big picture" of where I'm going. My husband and I do a lot of road trips and we use both paper maps and an atlas.
I've got one in my car, but I haven't touched it in probably 7 or 8 years (other than moving it from one car to another when I bought a new car), and it's probably horribly outdated.
I have a road atlas and a few state maps that I got at state welcome centers. I don't have a smart phone or GPS, but have a great sense of direction and geography and seem to be able to get by just fine, I've old school for sure!
we had two weeks in Wales last Fall. Made it from Gatwick car hire to Oxford and stopped at a bookstore, bought a large road Atlas. This helped us immensely to pick out a route from our first night's stay to Milford, and thence to many other trips to explore the area. The car GPS was helpful, but not the only resource for our travels.
As well, I have local state maps and a road Atlas in all my vehicles at home. With so many destinations for recreation and business, having the "big picture" as to possible routes and sightseeing is a whole bunch more information than simply a route from A to B as chosen by the software of a road map service. More than a few times I've found the road map service to take me far out of my way or have incorrect information in our rural areas. Having my own maps was the solution to verifying where I was driving.
I do have an old atlas - haven't needed it but I figure if GPS isn't working for whatever reason or I don't have cell service it's a good backup. It was good enough then and it's perfectly serviceable now.
I do. I don't carry a device with gps, but even if I did, I know that sometimes there are dead zones or the battery dies. You can't just rely on a phone.
I have one for the state of Michigan, an atlas of the 50 states and when we go 'home' a map of England.
However, the Michigan map is missing the pages for our local area and the map of England is missing the pages we need when we visit my daughter. Time for new maps I think.
You betcha! I like looking at the bigger picture and context. Plus like one of the above posters, I have a pretty good sense of direction and geography.
I also don't like to rely too much on GPS as I find it a bit distracting during driving. I might only use it if I need to pinpoint an unfamiliar place for the last mile or so.
