I do the 17.5 hr LAX or SFO > SIN (by choice) 4x in last 4 months
1) Leaves USA Left coast at night (10+ PM) travels in darkness for 17 hrs
2) Arrives at 6-7AM 2 days later... No need for hotel!
3) Take a quick shower at airport (S$12) and go right to work or play!
4) Does not burn much daylight
5) Return = Leave SIN at 9AM arrive USA (same day!) 9AM (15 hrs down wind)
6) No lost time... go right to work or play! (same day... employers LOVE that!... no 'down-time!'... just a long commute to work on that return leg.(timewise) )
No jet lag (as long as you can get a bit of sleep on a plane (I fly cattle car class). SOMETIMES I get a row to myself cuz everyone around me paid for an econo+ upgrade (so they are jammed 3 across on 787)
I will guess the NYC leg will be over the pole, so might be better for any jet-lag.
I do not like commuting to Asia from my TX home (too many long layovers)
I just booked LAX-SIN for $518 (32 hrs RT) pretty cheap $ per km!
Once did New York to Johannesburg non-stop on a 747. Was about 16 hours and I was beyond exhausted. Another 4 hours would be like jail time except less comfortable.
Of course 1st Class could be completely different but Ill likely never find out.
with my luck, I'd have 3 or 4 crying babies near me for the 20 hours...
I agree that breaking up long trips with stop-overs is great, but hard to do with asia trips, especially to SE asia. From the US east coast, you have SFO and then a long flight. Or Tokyo, but that's about 12 hours, and SE asia is another 8 or so.
The problem with breaking up long trip is that the trip never ends and if you just have few hours layover in airport, its not relaxing either. I have done 23 hours travel time every few years in different ways. I have done continuous flight with 3 layover in 3 different airport. It is nice to walk around but staying in airport suck & you are adding extra time for boarding ..etc. Lot of time wasted.
I have done same flight with long (14+ hours) layover on purpose to explore each connecting city and/or get good night sleep in hotel. That worked better but I had to add more days to my trip. But when I had enough time to get a hotel and get some sleep/breakfast but not enough to explore the city, it was nice on the body but mentally I been "travel" modes for days.
My favorite was when I took more than 24 hour layover and actually explore the city and went somewhere cool + got sleep. During my last trip connecting thru Dubai, we had 30 hour layover on purpose. We went to Abu Dhabi (2 hours taxi from Dubai). Slept the night, woke up early & explore 2 popular destination before heading back to Dubai for our next connection. That was my favorite
I distinguish between layovers and stopovers. I agree that layovers suck, even with lounge access. OTOH, a 1-2 day stopover where you have the time to sleep in a real hotel bed, have non-airport meals and see some sights can be great.
