It hit me that several major trips I have made occurred when weather in those areas deviated drastically from the norm.

Examples:

First of two trips to SE Alaska: For about 10 days a heat wave stifled the area. We were on a self-supported paddling journey so we mostly stayed on the water away from the few towns. But it felt like we had some 90-degree days even on the water, and in Juneau it got to 95 degrees.

My last trip to coastal Maine: About a week of humid stillness and 90-something-degree days lingered. Nights were hot also. The Atlantic water temperature rose from something like 57 to 66 in only 6 days!

First, and so far only, trip to Georgia: That winter it snowed along the coast where I stayed, and most days were in the 40s, nights below freezing.

My second trip to western Florida: Also in winter, this was a loong road trip. Night temps were ALL below freezing until I got to Tampa/St. Pete area, where it was right at about freezing at night. I was camping. The daytime highs were only in the 50s, with some in the 40s. The cold spell lasted so long that a massive fishkill left stinking carcasses all over the beaches. Citrus crop in bad shape.

The FL and GA trips occurred on two consecutive winters, during which WI had winter tornadoes and hail. It was warmer there than down south. I heard it was also warmer on the ME coast on some of those frigid southern days!

I usually always pack for my region. If I'm going to say Asheville, NC in the winter, I'll take good boots and wool socks.

If the islands, I'll pack a poncho for monsoons.

I also always keep a flashlight, backup battery, and roll of duct tape in my suitcase.

Fortunately, I’ve also enjoyed trips on which the normal weather prevailed.

Could be worse...some former neighbors went on a long road trip, focusing on NM, with visits also in AZ and CO. The husband grew up in NY and had never seen the awesome southwestern landscapes.

The day they visited Grand Canyon, it was socked in by cold gray felt. NO view whatsoever.

Yeah, but “packing for the region” in the cases above did not suffice.

I would say that traveling during Weather Oddity was memorable for the 103 passengers (100% survival!) of Aeroméxico flight AM2431

very amazing result.

(And then you need to FLY home...)
