Me too... I can do fine without cities. But.. If I venture onto one I can usually survive it for a Sunday / non-busy day of the week / free and available parking.

That stuff is a bit too 'touristy' for me, I would rather find a manor home in the boonies, or a ghost town / energy town that was abandoned. And find the history behind that. Cities are fine (for others). Glad they enjoy them! I have found plenty of fabulous arts in small town America (Park City, Jackson Hole, Sun Valley, Aspen, CO...) and even more Internationally. Yes... ironic, but great performers, authors, leaders... often originate (and enjoy) the countryside too!

And Free (a REALLY big no-no on C-D...)- $20 / night worldwide guesthomes are cheaper and a LOT more interesting / educational / fun / adventurous... (that is the rate for the WHOLE family, and usually includes a meal or two... )

Traveling with a purpose to engage with and assist locals ! OMG!!! heaven forbid!

(Hint' millions of us do this everyday, and have for centuries before 'tourism' / 'trendy' travel. )

Change your plans to stay and help others?

Work / get paid to travel !

I agree. I'm pretty introverted, shy and awkward so I need small doses.

It doesn't bother me to go to places when it's hot. People were like, "Why are you going to TX in July? It's so HOT!" Well, why not? I'd rather go somewhere HOT than somewhere COLD.

But I got some insight on why New Jersey people act the way they do.
I went to Italy last month and I couldn't agree more.

I won't go back.

Do you live somewhere cool?

I got the opposite reaction when I went to Iceland this summer. "Isn't it cold there? Why would you want to go somewhere cold in the summer? Why not go to the beach??". Because its 102* at home, and a few weeks away from the intense heat sounds amazing.

Not that I don't like the heat, but its nice to get a break from it.

That depends on where you live. In Europe, you can hop on a train and be in another country within two hours at a very affordable price.

Helsinki is a nice place to visit.

Having lived in Texas for many years before moving to Oklahoma, I have to lower my expectations of steak and BBQ.

Better college towns and football programs in Texas, too.

The Ouachita Mountains are okay, but most of them are in Arkansas, not Oklahoma.

Every not so small city has some boring museums, memorials, and festivals. We don't bother to visit OKC even though it's only 2 hours drive.

Traveling generally sucks - it's all about using up barrels of oil and then claiming how you've found a great and clean place. Meanwhile, the world heats up and people die of respiratory illnesses.

It's a simple formula. What if everyone in the world went everywhere in the world? We're only about 1/10th of the way there and it sux already.

People wax poetic about Italy. I'm of Italian ancestry. There is a reason that so many Italians left the place....but they turned it into a tourist trap and now people really think they are going somewhere authentic.

The best thing you can do for the world is to stay close to home.

I'm sure that is very unpopular because people don't want to realize they are using many times their weight in fossil fuels to visit somewhere. But then they recycle a plastic water bottle that was flown from Fiji and pat themselves on the back for their sustainability.
