I'll be traveling next month to NYC and my face/nose often gets cold so I was thinking of getting a cotton face mask to wear in the airport and maybe walking around the city if I feel I need it. But I wasn't sure how this would be perceived. I know a lot of people wear surgical masks if they're sick, but this is not a surgical mask so I would hope people would understand I'm not ill or contagious, I just have a cold face.
There is no restriction on wearing a half face or surgical masks at the airport (or anywhere in the public), but be ready to take it down for the security /custom agents for proper ID.
BTW: who cares what other people think. You wear it for (your) reasons.
A scarf is hard to keep fit snug around my face. Unless I'm going to tie it behind my head. I've tried this with several scarves that I own, they don't stay on well.
While I don't see this a lot I do see some people occasionally wearing those surgical masks in the airport.......it always makes me think of those movies where there is a super bug taking over the world
It's amusing that Americans find the surgical masks so odd. If you travel around Asia, they're about as common as carryon bags.
I had to fly to Kansas City last year and had been fighting a pretty nasty cold, so in an effort to not share my illness with my travel mates and other passengers, I wore a surgical mask. I got plenty of odd looks and even had a gate agent ask me if I needed to board early. I wanted to say "I'm not terminally ill ... I just have a cold that I'm trying not to share with you people!"
I wish more Americans would get on board with surgical masks and stop acting like it's so odd ... maybe we could stop passing illnesses around on planes!!

Unless someone is sick I don't think its necessary.
My advice: Get all your shots and wash your hands (in hot water with soap) multiple times during the day. If someone is obviously sick, do your best to avoid them.
Its worked for me. I've traveled much of the world and seldom even had a common cold when I came home. If you do get a cold...well...I just regard it as the price I have to pay for being able to travel. But wear a mask if you want. Its fine with me.
