My wife and I are going to a performance at the Metropolitan Opera in December. We've never flown into NYC and are unsure which airport is the best to book into. Our non-stop options from Las Vegas are either JFK or Newark. We'd be flying in on a Friday and out on a Sunday. Any suggestions?
JFK has the Airtrain which is a pretty decent way to Manhattan, that's what I would choose, it's a bit closer than EWR but I would also go by ticket price if there is a good difference.

From JFK one can take the Airtrain and connect to the subway system to get to Manhattan.
From EWR, I would take an airport bus (although there is an EWR airtrain connecting to train service) to get to Manhattan.
Either way it isn't a big difference in terms of hassle to get to Manhattan. So personally I would take the cheapest airline ticket as it doesn't really matter when flying to Manhattan whether one flies into JFK or EWR.
All good info above...having lived/worked in NYC and metro NY/NJ area for 3 decades, I would pick the best flight sched/price for the OP, and Uber or Lyft in to midtown.
EWR to midtown, Non surge/rush cost ~ $70, surge/rush maybe ~$100, but it is more convenient than schlepping luggage on train(s), et al.
For Newark airport to NY penn station via nj transit train..it's $13 one way adult. $9 for senior.
JFK, you can take bus/subway, or air train to subway, or city taxi. Subway service is least expensive at 2.75 but can suck on late evenings and weekends though. I had trouble getting a Lyft out of JFK, drivers kept canceling...I wonder if they're not allowed to pick up at JFK?
On a Friday evening I would warn against taking any car or the subway, massive weekend traffic starts then. The LIRR via the Airtrain is simple & direct, about 15+ minutes if direct from Jamaica. I assume easier for the rail from EWR too.
While LGA is technically the closest to Manhattan, the need to take a taxi from there during rush hour it can be really slow going, even the taxi line can be glacial before you get into a vehicle unless they have improved it in the last year.

LGA doesn't fly non-stop to/from Las Vegas. It's out of the 1500-mile perimeter. Denver is the only exception.
