Towns in the Cape Cod area (MA), Eastern Long Island such as the Hamptons area (NY), Outer Banks Area (NC), etc. Also there are small islands along the East Coast such Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island, etc. which are good vacation spots in the summertime.

This. Many many places on the East Coast that cater to vastly different crowds.

My personal favorites:

ME: Anything from Brunswick to Belfast (Bath, Camden, Wiscasset, Popham Beach, Bailey Island)
MA: Chatham
RI: Newport
NJ: Ocean Grove, Cape May

Never made it to the Hamptons or the Cape Hatteras area.

My suggestions would be {not in this particular order} some already mentioned

Hilton Head SC

Cape Cod/Nantuckett

Outer Banks NC

Assateague Island

Off the beaten path idea and 22 miles from the Atlantic Ocean is Savannah, GA which is beautiful and full of interesting history

Wherever your destination, enjoy!

The eastern end of Long Island is full of interesting & scenic places from The Hamptons - which is really a whole region on the southern shore stretching out to Sag Harbor & Montauk - to the North Fork which is somewhat less hauty or crowded & with vineyards & a nice restaurant scene.

One could take a train to NYC for a day trip/overnight too while anchored there & avoid traffic.

WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA, which includes within a 10-miles radius, ALL OF THE FOLLOWING

- Colonial Williamsburg, arguably the world's largest/best living-history town, with costumed craftsmen everywhere, wagon rides, romantic colonial restaurants, impersonators portraying our founding fathers. Originally built by the Rockefeller Foundation.

- Busch Gardens "the old country" theme park. It was voted as the prettiest theme park in America. Numerous thrill rides, roller-coasters, aerial sky-ride, Italian and Irish dancing/ musical shows, and gift shops based on themes of various European countries, including a giant German beer-hall with dancers. The park is open during warm seasons, as well as during December.

- Water County USA water park.

- Jamestown settlement, including replica of the settler's fort, primitive shelter, and settler's ship you can board, with costumed interpreters. Glass-blowing demonstrations.

- Numerous retirement, golfing communities, such as Ford's Colony and Kingsmill, several others.

- A "Great Wolf Lodge" family resort, all decorated in a rustic frontier theme, with an indoor basement pool

- 2 ice rinks, at Colonial Williamsburg and at Yorktown

- Outlet Stores of many name-brand companies such as apparel, sportswear, athletic shoes, Yankee Candle, etc.

- At least 3 Christmas ornament shops, some 2-stories high........ 2 miniature-golf courses, decorated in colorful themes.

- Yorktown Revolutionary battlefield and its new museum

- Army Transportation museum at Fort Eustis

- The 2nd-oldest college in USA "College of William and Mary". Only Harvard is older.

- Williamsburg Pottery factory, a huge complex of merchandise as big as a football field. Although I haven't been there or heard much about it in recent years.
