In the USA I would say Michigan (so much to do all over the state) and Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.

Idaho, Nevada, Eastern Oregon, northwest Colorado. We have been camping in these area for years and rarely see anyone but hunters and ranchers and a few snowbirds going to or coming from home base.

Bourdain put this on the map for me years ago with some of his shows, at work we especially talked about the men's singing societies, perhaps in San Sebastian? One of his last shows featured Asturias, next to Galicia, I definitely have this region on my short list.

USA - drive, camping trip to Little Big Horn, to WY, N and SD to see the sights. One of the best trips of my life.

international - (I once trekked horses) So..... Iceland, Greece and Romania. I found Romania fascinating. Greece: I did a drive camping trip, alone on Crete - It was amazing and people were so nice. Iceland is the most beautiful place on earth.

Obviously, to really enjoy a place, one must go off on one's own - at one's own pace to really soak in what matters.

Many places in the Midwest, but sticking to Ohio, Kelley's Island,https://kelleysisland.com/ Put-IN-Bay, and Marblehead come to mind. Cleveland, Columbus ans Cincinnati - very different from one another and each worth a visit.

Outside the US? Eastern Europe.

I'd agree with Eastern Europe. There are some amazingly beautiful cities that people in the US haven't even heard of.

Northwest Colorado is neat. Especially Dinosaur National Monument. Awesome view of the night sky there.

I was going to mention Dubrovnik. DH and I LOVED it. Rare combination of natural beauty and fascinating history. We stayed there a few days- so much better than a quickie excursion from a cruise ship. I highly recommend the kayak trip around the city walls.
