There's an association of bothies, whilst other countries such as the US also have cabins/shelters the public an use in more remote areas, including along the Appalachian Trial which has quite a few shelters. I think Bill Bryson spend the night in one in his book, 'A Walk in the Woods'. Youth Hostels are another cheap option in both urban and rural areas.
They sound horrible with no more comforts than a cave. I do like the looks of the one that is camouflaged into the stone hillside though.
