So I was looking at my Southwest Airlines luggage claim tags and thinking how it is. Their system knows I checked baggage and knows which reservation/flight it's on, why in the year 2019 am I carrying around tiny little pieces of paper with me to prove I checked bags?

If for some reason my baggage don't arrive, look up on the computer and see that yes we checked them. If we need to present them to retrieve our bags at the baggage claim (extremely rare) then just print them the claim number right on the boarding pass, I've had airlines in Asia do exactly this.

Lame.

As I recall, the baggage tag was staled to the boardung pass. How is that materially different from printing the data right on the BP? Staplers are pretty standardized, and can fit a wide range of paper configurations.

I'm pretty sure they are stickers, and they can come off. If stapler, who wants something with a staple in their pocket?

sticker loops is the most common.

I used to distain Bag tags... Then the one time my (air) bags were missing, we were to board a ship in 4 hrs.

Thus I found out WHY you are to attach your Ship tags to your bags BEFORE you fly... (bags will eventually meet you at a port). When doing our RTW, we stuck with a single carry-on each. (a challenge on Asia Budget carriers (7kg limit), If we must check... we don't plan to depart that destination for 24 hrs.

In probably 1000+ flights, I have had very few bag mishaps. Of late... it has been the FREE 2x50# SWA bags on continuing flights with stops... Bags get off-loaded and don't get re-loaded. so... Bags are a day late and I collect a $200 travel credit for the delay, if I come back to airport and fetch the late bags. (OK by me, since I now plan on the delay).

I have never LOST a bag, tho my stuff is pretty worthless, so would consider it a benefit in some cases.
