Hotels and food are priced similarly with cities like Dallas, Houston. Being a great city, you still have plenty of good hotels and restaurants to choose from plus a world-class arts scene and a vibrant downtown. Great public transportation also helps cut cost, far cheaper than car rental.
Chicago is an awful city. It is plagued by violence, corruption and extreme racism/segregation.
It's definitely not my cup of tea and I would never recommend it. NYC and the DC Metro area are far better destinations. Yes, they are pricier, but the food, attractions and diversity are much better.

I actually enjoyed deep dish the time I went, and I’m not an uneducated palate person. Got this at Gino’s East, Lou Malnati’s, and Giordano’s, and liked it at all three. YMMV, of course.
Based on a recommendation from a friend who lived in Chicago all his life until recently, we went to Pequods Pizza.. I was more a Pan Pizza than a deep dish, but, WOWWWWWWW was it good.
We just returned from a Midwest trip. We had a great time in Chicago.
