My wife and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage in 2020. We want to take a huge trip, if we can. I keep hearing amazing things about Vietnam. Hoi An, Hanoi, etc.

My concerns would be 1) how hot is it there, 2) how safe is it and 3) did the flight from the US just burn you out for a few days?

Just starting to explore this option and looking for advice.

Vietnam is amazing indeed.
1.) Climate - either hot or wet, mostly hot AND wet...humid...EXCEPT for the extreme north or the highlands where in winter it can get cool (not cold) at night during winter.
2.) Safety - very safe, you will get the usual touts in the tourist areas that might overprice things but even then it's still cheap.
3.) Flight and distance - yeah, you just have to bang through the jet lag. Impact varies by person but it's not an insurmountable obstacle.

Vietnamese love Americans. It's one of those places on my list to visit again.

+1 to Dd.

reminds me of a old John Ritter (3's company) movie: Americathon.
Vietnam is the resort capital of the world.
quote:
"...our one-time enemy Vietnam becoming a major tourist attraction among Asia’s wealthy and powerful (this was also predicted in Back to the Future Part II, as seen on billboards and on TV commercials within the movie, with the airline that takes most Americans to Vietnam being US Air). There’s also, curiously, a tastelessly androgynous Vietnamese rock band who perform at the telethon."

The South is hot year round. The North has mild but moist, misty winter.

If you stay about 2 weeks, the flight won't be bad. Numerous Vietnamese fly home YEARLY. They usually do 2 weeks or 1 month

Vietnam is amazing!!

Very safe. We went in November to both North & South. It wasn't unbearable … you don't want to go during the wet season though.

It only rained once in 2 weeks there and only for like a half hour.

You will love it!

Thanks, all. I'd have to check out the seasons. And I think we'd have about 10-11 days.

Another question:

How easy is it to travel within the country? Would love to see Hanoi and Ho An, and they are pretty far apart.

You can fly. We flew from Hanoi to Hoi An. Da Nang is where you fly in, Hoi An does not have an airport then we took a cab to Hoi An from there. The flight was like an hr/1hr 30m.

Also trains. We've taken night trains in Vietnam for longer distances, pretty reasonable sleeper cars.

Anyone done one of the longer river cruises? They often include Cambodia.

Can anyone elaborate on "Vietnam is great" etc? I Kept hearing about it, something it's the next Thailand as it's growing and things are very affordable there.

Best months to visit? Worst months to visit and should avoid?

So generally pretty safe? I was thinking maybe they look at foreigners/travelers as very rich since things are cheap there and the country's GPD per capita. But no problem it's generally pretty safe? I am thinking about Saigon.
