As a former resident of both Santa Barbara and the Bay area, I have to agree with the others - there's nothing "hidden" along the coast. Some sights are a bit more work, or may take longer, like the Channel Islands, but they're not hidden. Pinnacles is lightly visited, but another thought. The Santa Barbara Courthouse, and not far away, the Mission, are gems but hardly hidden. San Marcos pass, HWY 154, bypasses some of the coastal beaches along 101 to give you a nice ride through part of the Santa Ynez valley, (and some great views of the Channel Islands from the pass) with some good winery stops. And Cold Springs Tavern is a great lunch stop with a stupendous bridge view.
You are better off getting out of the LA harbor and as far away from the Hyperion sewage plant outfall as possible.
