My spouse and I are traveling to Oaxaca this year for Dia de los Muertos. We will be there five days. If you have been there, can you suggest where to visit, shop, and eat?
Oaxaca is a nice destination. It's not too big, not too small, doesn't have a bad reputation for crime, and is home to some wonderful regional foods. Obvious foods would be tlayudas, moles (many types), tamales, memelas, and chapulines.
They have a nice town square with restaurants around perimeter, although every time we go there are teachers camped there who have been on strike since the dawn of civilization.
Recommend you stay in Centro (downtown) so you're within walking distance to a lot of the places you want to see.
And must try the mole, even if you've had it elsewhere before. I heard Oaxaca is the birth place of Mole, although somebody argued the dish was actually from Puebla. Regardless, Oaxacan food is marvelous!
Thanks, everyone! We are staying at a hotel walking distance from the Zocalo. We are excited about the food. Does anyone have any specific restaurants they can recommend?
To be honest, most of the good food I encountered in my travel was found by accident / unplanned / not through recommendations. Just walk about and see which stall / restaurant / hut has the most local crowd and you know you're in for a good meal! This vetting process has never failed me - ever.
Order anything with a sauce / gravy. Oaxacans know how to make great sauces!
