I, too, am planning at least a year in advance if it's an international trip, and at least 6 months ahead if it's a domestic trip.

We do 3 months if staying in the States or 4-5 months if travelling internationally.

We often try to use miles and/or points for our vacations, but generally we don't plan very far in advance. We went to Hawaii this past February during the kids' school vacation, and because we wanted to use both miles and points, we planned the hotel and flight portions further in advance than we usually do -- it was whenever we were able to make the reservations. I can't recall if it was 6 months or a year in advance. Otherwise, we plan big vacations about 3-4 months or so in advance. Small trips we might do a week or two in advance, maybe a month.

Once I have the hotel and flights, though, I usually don't do much planning until right before we leave.

I don't really do touristy things, but I end up going to touristy places. I'd say min 2 months for domestic, min 3 months for international. It all depends though, as I've booked my flights to Tokyo a year in advance for Golden Week 2020.

one year.

sometimes, there is a significant discount
by booking that early, and another
discount by partly paying early,
so we pay half after six months,
and the rest upon arrival.
doing both saves 35-40%.
no prices breaks on the
insurance, though.
