30,000+ reports of TSA thefts 5 years ago, and most people dont even bother to file claims due to time contraints.
Your link says 30k reports of thefts over a five year period 2010-2014
Approx 800 million passengers annually in USA in that time frame (it's over a billion now)
800 million x 5 years = approx 4 billion passengers.
30k / 4 billion = 0.0000075, or 0.00075%.
You might as well be claiming that lightning strikes people who visit Florida. Sure it happens and it's wise to take precautions but taken as an absolute statement it's absurd.
Your claim that "most people dont even bother to file a claim" is a made up fact if I've ever heard one.
I would carry on the laptop, I would never check it or send it by mail. Where do you think it's going to be stolen? When you are going through security? I've been flying with a laptop for 25 years and have not had it stolen... yet.... actually I've never had anything stolen since my first flight in 1970. Yep, I'm old.
This is exactly what I don't understand.
It's possible for checked-in luggage to be stolen, but carry on luggage, really?

The Florida curmudgeon vibe is strong in this thread.
The OP needs to book the MCO-YVR flight, get TSA Pre, and pay for a premium seat. Westjet blocks out the middle seat and gives more legroom. That’s the minimum travel hassle.

Not to mention those are just reports of theft. Not confirmed. How many of those are people who lost their items and blamed it on TSA?

Wrongamundo! Below are just 2 articles where authorities state many thefts go unreported, I could post many more:

Camera's catch TSA people stealing from passenger's all the time. Since 2002, TSA fired 513 agents for thefts. How many are there that didnt get caught? God only knows.

In 17 years, 513 agents fired? That's still a microscopic number when you consider the number of airports and TSA employees.
I just flew over the weekend. Not a single agent touched me, nor did any of them have an opportunity to steal from me. I put my bags on the conveyor belt, and walked through the metal detector. I was waiting on the other side of the xray to collect my bags before anyone else could have gotten to them. Even if they did have reason to search my bag (which hasn't happened in probably more than 10 years), they would have done it right in front of me.
The first link you have there is about passenger on passenger related theft, it says absolutely nothing about theft from TSA agents being underreported. What do you think a desperate Google search without even bothering to read what you found supports your fabrications?
Second link is useless since behind paywall but given quality of first reference I'm skeptical so let's have you provide the quote that confirms most TSA theft goes unreported.

I’m trying to understand where the TSA has an opportunity to steal things? I put my roll-aboard on the conveyer belt. It enters an enclosed x-ray machine. I clear the metal detector in the TSA Pre line and watch my bag exit the x-ray machine.
