I suspect the vocal minority that are paranoid about scanners are exactly that... an insignificant percentage that makes the loudest noise about it (and probably everything else in their lives), so they greatly overestimate how much anyone else really cares.
I'm not paranoid about it, I just don't like it. But for those who enjoy being felt up by strangers, go for it; perhaps they'll let bootlickers go through multiple times if there's not too much of a line.
