Anywhere an Amtrak train with a sleeping car goes, I go.
The line through Atlanta goes between NY and New Orleans.
Hi GVLNATIVE; thanks for mentioning this!
In my 41 years of being on the planet I've taken trains in Europe but I've never taken a train in the US before. After your post I just took a look at the Amtrak fares from SC to Miami; not too bad for a roomette. I didn't even realize they had 'full rooms'.
Every Thanksgiving my mom and I meet up in Miami (I live in GA and she's in SC); I fly and she takes a bus which I've been trying to get her away from for a while. I had booked a flight to Miami for this November ($99 roundtrip from ATL) with the intention of staying there the entire month of November this year which would be a first for me as I usually only stay a week or two. While I still think it's too early to tell if the trip will still happen, I am beginning to wonder about transportation.
For now, I am operating under the assumption that flying will still be too high risk for me to do come November as I wouldn't want to meet up with my mom after being in an airport/on a plane. Amtrak is starting to seem like it 'might' be a good alternative as (no offense to anyone taking Greyhound as I've used it before myself) I just feel as if it would be a nicer/safer option for my mom. So my thought at this time is that maybe I could drive to SC and then we take the trip down to Miami together on Amtrak in a roomette. If I'm lucky and get her feeling comfortable enough between now and November, maybe she can take the train on her own so that I can still stay there for a month (if I meet up with her and ride with her I'll need to shorten the trip to likely one week). She's been wanting to take an Amtrak train for a while now actually.
The full room they offer seems like it would be good for a longer trip that's across the country. I'm intrigued now so off to YouTube to look for Amtrak vids. Definitely would love to hear more from you and others about their Amtrak experiences
Our next non-flight trip will be to Morelia in Michoacán. It's a beautiful city (well at least el centro) that is a culinary gem, we've had friends recommend it and I've been wanting to go ever since that show "Taco Chronicles" has an episode on carnitas that featured Morelia.
It's about four hours by bus from here.
Morelia looks beautiful! I've definitely heard of it before and would love to visit one day; thank you for sharing that beautiful photo. I'll have to move it up on my 'to go' list now that you mentioned how much of a foodie city it is!
I like hiking a lot, so we are planning to go somewhere in the mountains for at least few days in the summer. I usually organize such things with my family and friends (and their families), and usually we do it in a random day in the summer.
Planning do go in July, let's see how the situation will be...
Extremely long 13 to 14 Hours Train Ride From Astana To Almaty in Kazakhstan USSR Soviet Republic combining Asian Chinese Muslim look natives with White Russian Christian peoples that is Middle Eastern
Rather quick bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in UAE. Desert Oasis no trees hopefully along the way for change of scenery even when I still love a lush forests landscape
Approximately $20 10 Hours+ smooth Public Transportation network between Bangkok to Phuket Thailand
Our PM is pushing for state borders to be open and domestic tourism to be up and running by the July school holidays, about seven weeks away.
I will mind the grandkids then, on and off, to give their poor parents a break from all the stress of the changes to their lives.
Then, to recover, we are thinking to do an old fashioned driving road trip to southern Queensland, which is marginally warmer in our winter than Sydney. Might be away for our wedding anniversary and the trip would replicate our honeymoon.
Probably somewhere in the Dakota's, but not necessarily just for reasons of having fewer cases. They're just somewhat nearby anyway and we like it. Another option would be to check out the shores of Lake Superior a bit.
ETA: You think GA is bad in the summer? Try going to South Beach in July (I had a friend convince me to meet her there last July for a concert although I knew I probably wouldn't take well to the heat there...last time I ever plan on visiting Miami in the dead of summer for sure)...
South Florida is actually cooler in July and August than the southeast. The temperature has never hit 100 degrees in Miami. I lived most of my life in Myrtle Beach and it is much hotter there than here.
Our summers are longer for sure but not hotter.
The average daily high in July in Augusta, Georgia is 92 degrees. In Miami it is 89 degrees.
No concrete plans at the moment, but I would love to go hiking somewhere. Be one with the nature again. I probably would have enough fill of sunshine after being at home for an extended amount of time and avoiding going out in general. I also have a satellite phone that is still in pristine condition and would love to try it out. Should be good even when I'm just on a hike according to this source. I'd also love to take more landscape photos, it's been a while since I took my camera out.

I've done the Seattle (SEA)to East Glacier Park (GPK) on the east bound Empire Builder, mid Sept 2019, as the Lodge was closing down for the winter. Roomette ~$280?. Then immediately turned around at GPK to catch the west bound EmpireBuilder that goes thru the Columbia Gorge to Portland (PDX) ~$85 (used Amtrak points, coach class). Then down to Salem (SLM) $12 on Cascade train, where I used to live, saw some friends. Then caught a bus to Lincoln City Or ($12?) to visit my sister and see if she needed any help on the Beach House, she didnt. Then caught another bus back to PDX ($18?). Stayed overnight at the Crystal Palace across from Powell Books. Then back to SEA on a Cascade Train, (4trains daily $26). It was a fast 4 nights, 5 day trip. I wanted to see experience the sleeper cabin and see some scenery without doing any driving. Also waved at StealthRabbit.
This month, we were going to see the Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC via fast ferry from SEA and then train from Vancouver BC (VAC) back to Seattle on the Cascade Amtrak train.
Thinking about flying down to Houston to visit cousins, then train to LAX to visit another cousin. Train on Surfliner to San Jose CA to visit sister, then Amtrak Pacific Starlight to Salem to visit and then Amtrak Cascades back up to Seattle. I may fly back to SEA from SJC, faster and slightly cheaper.

Oooh, I watched that episode last week & by the end I was salivating like one of Pavlov's pooches. Enjoy & don't forget the Pepto!
