The trip we had scheduled to Ireland & the Uk for May ( we should be there now) included a pre paid Hertz rental. Luckily I cancelled the rental car about a month ago, & got my refund in a few days. I hope they survive.
By the end of March, Hertz Global Holdings Inc. had racked up more than $24 billion in debt, according to the bankruptcy filing, with only $1 billion of available cash, that's never a good recipe!
At the moment, it's only Hertz US that has filed for bankruptcy.
"Hertz's international operations in Europe, Australia and New Zealand as well as its franchised locations in the US are not affected." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52780841
While it'll be interesting to see what impact this has (if any) on Hertz' rental prices and on the prices of their competition, I have never rented from Hertz as they have always been considerably more expensive than the competition in my experience.

Hertz owns Thrifty, Dollar, and Firefly as well. Those are their budget rental services.

Ah, gotcha. I've used Thrifty and have gotten good deals with them. Dollar has always been on the more expensive end when I've looked to book. Haven't heard of Firefly!

Remember Advantage Car Rental? Hertz bought them through a bankruptcy sale, sold their US business and turn Advantage international operation into Firefly.
Sad since they have been around for over a hundred years. Sadder for me since I invested in them several months ago on the stock market and it is now basically worthless. They had financial issues before the pandemic that made anykind of major downturn in business a super high strain for them. Avis was in better financial shape before the virus and now they are in a great position to come out of this even stronger as they capture more market share.
