This might be a ignorant question but I’ve never traveled alone. After I land and need to get to my hotel, do I just go outside and ask any cab driver that is available?
Google the airport your flying to, on their website look for Ground Transportation. They will give you the options and usually a map where the access points for transport are located in that airport. Don't forget, in many locations Uber will/may be a better option and likely will be shown too.
Edit..I just saw in another thread that you're going to Philadelphia. FWIW, instead of a taxi or Uber, I would just take the Airport Rail line from the airport to the Suburban Station. From there to the Westin is a 5 minute walk. I've done this several times without issue, much cheaper too!

Thanks. I changed my hotel to Holiday Inn Cherry Hill, NJ. Closer to where I need to be.
How much is a taxi? I’m assuming from the airport to the hotel is about $100

Don't know about taxi but Uber is about $55 + or -.
At any major airport there will be a Taxi Line. Just follow the signs to Ground Transportation/Taxi and you will find it easily. Usually there is a person there to direct people to the next taxi and keep things orderly.
Very easy and simple. Don't get into the "next" cab if it is a rat trap. No obligation just because it is next in line.

Most airports have a taxi stand. Use that. Many airports have shills that will approach you and try to sell you a taxi ride, most are unlicensed taxis, some will try to rip you off. You also didn't say were you were traveling to. In some countries hiring an unlicensed taxi will get you into a potentially harry situation.

It’s Philadelphia. How do you know if they are licensed?
