Difficult to park, and U-Hauls normally don't have unlimited mileage - they charge so many cents per mile. Problematic if you're actually using it to get around, travel more than a few miles from your base, etc. Also, you'll have to Uber/Lyft to the U-Haul place, which will likely be nowhere near the airport.

I saw a U-Haul pick up at the Grand Canyon yesterday and don’t want to think how much the mileage charge was for that.

We had no issues in FL. Picked up in Tampa and returned to Orlando.

I noticed it seems to be the inter-mountain west where the shortage hits hardest. Five weeks out from a vacation week (no plan as of now), the rental car companies I use aren't taking reservations at all in Denver, Salt Lake City or Boise. I couldn't imagine driving a U-Haul on some of those mountain roads.

I have been stranded in the past at an airport (SLC) with a rental car reservation and no cars on the lot. It's a sickening feeling.

What does a person do in this situation?

And in many areas, you may be waiting for a ride as Uber/Lyft are having difficulties recruiting drivers.

My Uber/Lyft rates have nearly doubled since Covid.

Taxi is cheaper in many destinations.

When we have been stuck W/O a car... miraculously other cars appear (after a very long wait). (I.e. you are driving away from Avis rental site in a Hertz car)

This was a time before Uber or Lyft, so I went down the line, one by one, waiting in long lines, until I could find a car. I had a five-hour drive ahead of me, so taxi was not an option. I landed with a reservation from (A) and drove away a few hours later with a car from (B). If no cars were available, I would have stuck to my original reservation and waited it out at an airport hotel.
