Especially late afternoons when kids and parents alike have had their fill and are all tired and grumpy and have stomach aches from too much junk food.

Many people have to deal with crowds their entire life.
I worked at the World Trade Center. I'd go down to have a cigarette out on the Plaza, and there would be people milling around, looking up, and at least one person lying on their back taking a picture of the towers from that vantage point. A million people must have a picture of that. The streets were always infested with people following flags or something on walking tours, both before and after the attacks--as a matter of fact, until COVID, the crowds had become WORSE than before the attacks. (OK, confession, for a short time during the rebuilding I volunteered to do a few of those walking tours, lol, but people wanted to hear our stories.) I would wonder "you have the time and money to take a vacation and you come HERE?" To me, it was where I worked, and these people were in my way when I went to get some lunch.
Pretty much anything in DC outdid every other touristy spot I've ever been to as far as being overcrowded goes (Space Needle, Niagara, the Arch, Mt Rushmore, 4 Corners, etc).
Zion National Park on a beautiful early November weekend when shuttle buses aren’t running. Ditto Bryce when the Chinese tourists were arriving in their tourist buses in droves,
The Sistene Chapel. Even with my DH in a rented wheelchair, it was a miserable experience. People LITERALLY pushed his wheelchair to get him out if the way!
Followed closely by the bus and subway in Tokyo. But the people tried very hard to be polite.
Same. The five year old, there for the first time, asked if we could go back to the hotel in Daytona and swim. The crowds were so bad even the child wanted to leave.
NYC- we can only tolerate it for 1.5 days before we have to leave. Every time we go, it’s a little worse. Haven’t been in five years.
