As a kid, we used to camp on Black Lake. It's very nice, but a pretty long ways from Charlevoix or Traverse City or Sleeping Bear.

Likewise, you aren't going to want to do a day trip from Charlevoix to Tahquamenon Falls, it's about 2.5 hours each way.

Also to a kid, and adults, the Soo Locks are really cool.

If I were to look at 7 night, I'd probably say 3 in TC/Charlevoix. Your probably going to want to spend a whole day at Sleeping Bear and another in and around Mackinaw.
Then 3 nights in the UP - maybe one at Sault Ste Marie, one around Tahquamenon and Whitefish point, one at Pictured Rocks. Last night in TC.

Thanks so much to both of you! Scorpio, is there one "base" hotel location we could reasonably use for 3 nights in the UP?

With 7 nights, and flying into and out of Traverse City, where should we aim to stay? We don't want to drive an inordinate amount, but want to visit the highlights (Mackinac Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes, maybe waterfalls on the UP.). With an 8 year old daughter, should we stay in one "base" for 7 nights, or maybe do a 4/3 split? Looking at Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Traverse City as possible places to base ourselves, but not sure what's best. Would it make sense to do 3 nights in Traverse City and 4 nights in say Petoskey? Hugely appreciate any further help - thank you!
Charlevoix for sure. Great little town. Your kid will love all the boats and the bridge. Weathervane Terrace Inn is older, but in a great central location.

I would rent a cottage near Mackinaw City as base. There is plenty see within 2 hours (Pictured Rocks, Traverse City, etc.). If you are looking on VRBO, look around Mackinaw City, Carp Lake, Burt Lake areas. You'll be close to Petoskey/Charlevoix as well as Mackinac and the UP.
