With airbnb you pay them, not the host, so they are the ones who would issue a refund. The cancellation policy is stated before booking, as in cancel before whatever date for a full refund, cancel before this other date for half refund minus service fees, etc. and it happens automatically if you click the cancel button. Generally speaking the host has nothing to do with it.
Airbnb and Vrbo are exactly the same. The homeowner can cancel your reservation for any reason whatsoever and you are SOL. I've had it done to me more than once.

If they are exactly the same, why is this thread here talking about a homeowner refusing to refund? On airbnb if I'm within the refund period and click the cancel button there is nothing the homeowner can do, it puts the money back onto my credit card with a refund.

Its been one month and now 1 day as I type, my specialist to help my cancellation has not responded at all, I got deserted by VRBO. A company can't even process a simple cancellation. No responses to pictures I took of my computer screen which show I followed the process , I did everything according to the cancel guidelines for a refund.

They are a joke of a company. Beware.

Are you dealing with one specific person, or are you sending messages to a group email address?
If it's one person how do you know if they're still with the company? Perhaps they quit or got laid off.

3 general claims Went NO where so I got assigned to
1 specialist claim person Went NO where

0 for 4 getting a simple result. Its all up to Bank of America credit card dept to stand by me to get my refund.

VRBO, I never knew a company could be this horrible.

I concur, we’ve used VRBO and other rent by owner individual sites to rent pool homes in FL, GA, TX, and AZ since around 1990, some also arranged flights and/or car rental, or we did flights/car rental with Expedia.
It’s always gone as smooth as silk, who knows, maybe we’ve been lucky.

I don't know VRBO but I imagine it's a similar story there.
Superhost my azz. The woman who ripped us off for $4,397 is listed as a "Superhost". Super at separating you from your money!

We used VRBO ourselves for over 10 years with no issues. We even had our own beach condo for rental through them.

Never a problem until it is. Just know there is no back-up or protection and if you need customer service, hah. None.

Same here. I feel for ya. I have all these claim numbers too and dozens of phone numbers, even the "Office of the President" LOL. None get answered and no calls get returned. No supervisor to speak to. A guy on Twitter was trying to get a class-action suit together against VRBO.

I hope you have better luck with B of A than we had with Barclay's. I will never use their card again. B of A will be our primary from now on, until they prove worthless like Barclay's. At least B of A seems to have good customer service. Like answering the phone....

Another thing (we think) is that once you have rented a couple of times through them, you're probably given references behind the scenes so other VRBO owners know your history.....you left the place clean, etc.

In COVID times here, as things are loosening up, owners are probably busy. Cut them a little slack (but not 2 weeks for sure). You are going to know the ones who are flakes right away. Caveat Emptor!!
The terms of my rental contract were clearly stated. A full credit voucher was guaranteed in the case of border closure. The owner refused to issue it. Stated she owed us nothing.

Really pretty clear. Amazing to me a business person can just decide not to honor a contract, and the hapless buyer is just helpless against this crime.
