I don’t disagree, but sometimes public transport is all you got. I’m glad there is a way.

We visited DC about 15 years ago, we stayed on the outskirts, & used the hotel shuttle to take us to the train station, It waws a fairly short & quick ride into the city. It was not a pain at all, but I don't mind public transport. The shuttle also took us to restaurants etc for dinner.

I enjoyed staying near Dupont Circle, Woodley Park, and the Spy Museum but assume hotel prices might be better in Alexandria. Tripadvisor is good for checking out hotel prices and location and their maps identify any close by Metro stations.
WHen the kids were younger, we drove to DC from Tampa for Spring Break, parked at the
Embassy Suites by Hilton Alexandria Old Town
and used the metro which is across the road each day to go wherever we wnted in town. DC has a very good subway metro system.

The advantage of Embassy suites was the size of the rooms for 4 people, the fact that they serve a full good breakfast for free and the location to the metro met our needs A few nights, we just walked down the street into the town and ate there.

as for the time to gt there, I saw it as a chance to unwind and rest a little on the way back to the hotel after a day of walking.
