I spent one week in New Dehli on my way to Nepal. While it was certainly exotic, I can't say that I enjoyed it. As a woman alone, I found some of the men quite rude and intimidating. One thing that happened repeatedly while walking on the street, escorted or not, was to have a man approach me, stiffen his arm, and then swing it at me with all his might while looking straight ahead and pretending that nothing had happened. He would then turn around and look at my reaction.

Actually you do have to be careful around Delhi; it's probably the most unsafe city for single female tourists.
A ride on the Konkan Railway (one of the engineering marvels) is awesome.

As k374mentioned, Mysore is worth a visit. The city is specially well known for the Dasara Festival. It is quite an event in October. Welcome to the Palace City, City of Kings (http://www.mysoretourism.org/ - broken link)
I've traveled to more than 20 countries and India was my least enjoyable. The poverty and filth were a bit overwhelming, and I've been to several developing countries. India was the poster child for 3rd world countries.
It seemed so cut-off from the rest of the world. People would reach out and touch me in the streets without invitation. They'd ask if I'd shake their children's hands, simply because I looked ...foreign. I'm accustomed to a few stares when entering a homogeneous population but this was certainly more of an intrusion on my personal space. I couldn't have applied enough hand sanitizer!
I would recommend spending as much time outside of the city as possible. The countryside has clean air and the landscape is gorgeous. If you've any interest in the cultural and religious history, there's plenty to see and learn.
