I guess I was about 35. A good friend had just gotten her first rating of being able to fly VFR with her private license and we went up a few days later in a Cessna 152.
It wasn't long before she started to rack up lots more ratings and got her instructors license. I was her first student.
It was sometime after I soloed in that little 2 seater that I took my first commercial flight and it felt really weird not to be at the controls and only be able to look out a small side window. In that big jet it felt like we rolled down the runway for ages before the nosewheel even came up off the ground.
Landing was even worse because I couldn't see the runway!
In a couple of years she'll be retiring from a career as a pilot with a major airline.
Mine was when I was about 5o r 6 years old going to Chicago. It was an incredible and memorable experience. I was so scared. I cried because I didn't want to go on the plane. I thought it was scary. My dad hauled me into the plane. I slept during the take off. And I remember my dad waking me up to make me look at the window and I was looking at the night sky! It was night time and I could see all the dark clouds and everything.
I was 16 and I flew (alone) from Salt Lake City to Phoenix to see my brother. I cried the whole way. I was absolutely petrified! My sister ended up flying to Phoenix a few days later so she could fly back up with me.
Fast forward 9 years, I've now been on over 100 flights. Mostly alone. I LOVE flying!
