I am Hispanic and have never traveled outside of the U.S. I've only actually been to two cities lol, Miami and Orlando, FL. I don't really feel anything missing, really. I don't understand what is the big deal about travel. I feel like I can find out everything I need to know about a place by just looking at pictures. And also I think is why us blacks and Hispanics don't travel is because of economic reasons. the white man can travel because they have a lot of money, naturally. The blacks can't travel because they're too busy trying to feed their families. They are not allowed to have high-paying jobs by our society. they are oppressed. that is why.
My stepmother (a white women with plenty of money) wouldn't know culture if it bit her in the rear end). But, as a young, lowly-paid USAF airman, I made many wonderful memories in other countries with friends who were both Black & Hispanic. They were as interested in seeing and experiencing other cultures just as I was. i still keep in contact with many of them. And they are just as successful as I am. So one can either stay poor (financially or culturally) and blame OTHERS for their own doings. Or they can get off their behinds, get out and experience all this wonderful world offers them. Everyone has a choice...

I am Hispanic and grew up working class and always wanted to travel outside of my state. It doesn't take much money to do so. I save about $75/month for a yearly vacation and I use a credit card with points so I can use those points towards a travel credit on my credit card. I paid the hotel and the hop on hop off bus with the points and paid only about $450 for 2 flight tickets. The rest of the $450 we saved was used towards airport transfers (used discount coupons) and restaurants (use concierge at my hotel to get coupons to nearby restaurants). My hubby and I are now middle class ...around $60k annual income but we don't spend money throughout the year on expensive gadgets or items and we pay down our debts quickly and don't have children nor any plans for them!
It's not part of our culture either...we have some family that are surprised that we do these vacations but we just have different preferences on how to spend our time and funds.

I agree stereotypes should not be relied on but they are there for a reason b/c there is some truth to them.

You said soemthing telling in your answer. You grew up with white people. That may be why you are more into traveling than the majorty of african americans.

In northern European cultures, vacation time often means going out and roughing it: staying in a cabin or tent, fishing, hiking, berry-picking, mushroom-picking, you name it. I think it ultimately stems from the old practice of temporary economic (food gathering) activities that took place in the summer when resources in the mountains became available, a practice called transhumance, while your grain is growing in the warm valley, you take the family up to the higher elevations to graze your animals and gather foods unavailable in the valleys. Today, it is more of a recreational thing, but people still take part in the same activities, just less intensively.

Native Americans did (and still do) the same thing, going in the mountains in the summer.

I'm Hispanic and grew up with African Americans...none of which traveled or anything like it but I still grew up with the idea of traveling (reading books) so much so that I got my dad to buy me a globe for Christmas.

The biggest culprit is the corporate dollar that buy and or feature the national political, auto, real estate, hotels, parks, magazines, travel, airlines, and restaurant ads ad nauseun is they all seem to feature white actors. Why would a black family desire to visit and area that is only represented by white people?

There is only three ways I know of to cool off in the summer short of going to Alaska: air-conditioning, the mountains and the ocean.

You bring up a good observation...I never thought about that. I'm Hispanic but I don't think I've seen too many travel ads with hispanic actors...never crossed my mind...Thanks.

Now that you point it out, good observations though its not something I've paid attention to. I've been to a lot of places like Colorado Springs, the Florida Keys, Yellowstone national park, the Utah canyons, Route 66 and there were more foreign tourists than black Americans. Among other minoirites I think Indian Americans travel a lot along with some Asian Americans though not all.

Outside of the old south states where there are lot of country black folks, most African Americans tend to be urban, especially wealthier ones. Last summer I took a cross country roadtrip with some friends and mentioned to this older black man I worked with about all the stops and he was never interested. He said he hated the outdoors and nature and wouldn't even drive around the Rockies to see the scenery. That was what he told me. He also said that the only places on my roadtrip he was interested in are Las Vegas, L.A. and "maybe" Memphis.

I've noticed larger numbers of black tourists on cruise ships, casinos, amusement parks, and beach resorts, especially in Florida and the Caribbean.

I'm a minority too but I realize just because an area doesn't have a lot of people from your race doesn't necessarily mean hostility is the reason. A lot of towns in the midwest for example were settled by pioneers a hundred ago, same with early European immigrants in places like western MD and PA. Often there just have not been jobs for new immigrants or black migrants and no new businesses or companies to attract new comers.

Ive been all over the US including very rural places in Louisiana, North Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Illinois and Indiana and have never experienced anything negative. I know there are some places that wouldn't be welcoming of "ghetto" people but not all blacks though. In some rural areas people just are uncomfortable with strangers who seem like they may be up to no good especially since the reach of the law can be pretty far away in the isolation of places like the high plains or the southwest deserts or the hills of Appalachia.

I don't know where that person got the idea that Southerners are afraid of heights, that is very funny given that large areas of the South are actually quite mountainous like half of Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and West Virginia (whether this is a southern state is debatable given tis history).

I've been across the country and back with two very good friends. People are often surprised how I could afford to do this (i am currently a grad student and work part time). These are often the same people who spend $70 every weekend going to fancy bars and clubs while I can just chill in a local pub, and the same people who look down on me for doing most of my shopipng at Walmart when they insist on Abercrombie and North Face. For a lot of younger people they're either very snobby and go on these trips to Ireland and Britain or study abroad in Spain etc or are the hippie, backpacking type. Its perfectly fine going in between and spending nights in Motel 6, Days Inns, and local roadside motels and eating at truck stops and country diners, where one can get the best, heartiest food compared to the chains and where you get genuine small town friendliness vs good corporate training.
