Why anyone would let anything of value (either cash or emotional) out of their possession is beyond me! If you do that, then you truly deserve to lose your stuff!
Never let your carry-on stuff either sit behind while you go through the metal detector, or go ahead of you! Ideally, there should be 2 of you---you put your stuff into the x-ray equipment, you step through the metal scanner, you pass through. While you're waiting for your things to come out, your partner is waiting to go through the scanner. DO NOT enter the metal detector until the 1st person through has obtained possession of all of your stuff!
If TSA complains, too bad---you need to keep your things safe and secure. You are in the right.
