Different experiences - I have taken a KLM 747 across the pond, didn't get upgraded, but the coach seat and food were fine. Their default beer is Heinekin - food was decent. I have flown Lufthansa a couple of times in Europe and they were OK.

I have had OK experiences with Delta and Northwest across the pond when not upgraded. I have a good many miles built up on Delta and I use miles for an upgrade if I can. The upgraded Delta business class is really quite good.

FWIW I have flown Aeroflot from Moscow to St. Petersburg on the famous Ilushyn 154, it was a good ride. But being a near-fluent Russian speaker makes me the stewardess's favorite American right away.
