I-10 is the best/quickest route. You can drive it safely anytime of the year. Storms are un-predictable anytime also. I drove that route a few years ago and missed most storms, did see a few rainstorms, but nothing drastic. I-10 is a good interstare road with many decent rest areas. As others said watch your gas tank. The only boring part we found was traveling across Texas where there are miles and miles of nothing but tumbleweeds. It took us 4 1/2 days to get there.
