WASHINGTON (AP) -- Striking a blow for cell phone haters everywhere, a government agency on Tuesday said it will keep a rule in place that requires the divisive devices to be turned off during airline flights.

The reasoning behind the decision was technical. But the avalanche of comments the Federal Communications Commission has logged from airline travelers have been nothing short of visceral.

"These days it's impossible to get on a bus without at least one person hollering into their cell phone, invading the private space of everyone around them," one member of the public wrote in an e-mail to the FCC.

"That's bad enough when one can get off in 10 minutes. To have to suffer through HOURS of such torture, with nowhere to go and miserably cramped conditions -- someone is going to explode."

Thank goodness, it's bad enough that people talk in restaurants with food in their mouths, chewing, while talking. At least the only thing I have to hear on planes is "Would you like anything to drink sir?" Or the in flight movie.... Which normally stinks. lol.

Thank God! What were they thinking...even to consider allowing this? I can think of nothing worse than dozing on a flight and being rudely awakened by someone's cell-phone ringing in the next seat over...

1) Im really really really really really really glad i dont have to be stuck on a plane beside some fool full of self importance taking a work call for a 3 hour flight, or a 14 year old girl OMG OMG OMG for a 3 hour flight either.

2) Any reasoning they have that is technical is BS. I saw on a show where the old skool phones from 7+ years ago had a minimum effect on a plane when the electrics were not insulated, when they were, it had none. Modern phones wouldnt have an effect on the instruments like they say. Remember you couldnt have a cell phone on in a hosp beside machines years ago? Well they now allow you because it dosent affect the machines.

My friend is an aircraft mechanic, and he asked his boss last year. His reasoning for the ban is (and it may just be Irelands reason, but i doubt it) is that the Gov dosent want to waste the money to spend on all the testing.

That said, im happy that I dont have to sit beside a goon with a phone.

You're kidding...right?

This is DEFINETLY not going to "fly" with me. I NEED my cell phone on flight since I almost always talking to someone. I really wonder how this is going to go over...
