When you sign for a hotel room or car rental, you are agreeing (in the fine print) that you can be held responsible for any charges or damage and your card can be charged, with or without your approval. Of course you can contest the charges with your credit card (very different than debit) and they will investigate. If the charges aren't legitimate, the card will charge back the vendor.

Some cards have additional protection for rental car damage and CDW as well.

Responsible money management does not gurantee things go well. What happens if you get seriously injured in this country and dont have insurance or you get denied.
You have insurance--you won't get denied for your claim unless you do something stupid to become injured, like a DUI or "Jackass" type stunt. And you also carry a short term disability policy.

We are all one step away from bad credit. If you get injured and cannot work anymore you will lose your health insurance and end up in bankrupty fast.
You carry COBRA for 18 months and if you still can't work you'll be getting SSDI by that point.

A good piece of it is luck

I no longer believe that if you work hard and play by the rules you will end up OK.
You save part of your income so that you've got something to fall back on.

Assuming you were paid enough to begin with to save and have health insurance those are all the right things to do. I am curious how many out there have not done them or what happens if you lose your job BEFORE you have money saved. It does happen. COBRA is great in thought but its not cheap
