A hotel manager once told me that no motel wants to be the cheapest in town -- you get all the drunk partiers and vandals. You raise rates above the rock-bottom,which keep budget rates high.
I used to do the numbers in my head. A 12-unit Asian family-run property charges 39.95. With full occupancy, the best they can gross per day is $480. Of that, comes taxes, maintenance, utilities, yada, and the personal income the whole family.
Only Asians can do that, because they get low-interest start-up financing from within the Asian syndicate. And child labor (their own) keeps payroll down.
I remembar paying $2 in Klamath Falls. Know where Motel 6 got their name? Six bucks a room. TV was extra, B/W, three snowy channel, rabbit ears. I think in 1986, I stopped at the Rodeo Motel in Tucuncari NM. The lady said she only had one room left, sleeps 8 with kitchenette, so she apologetically would have to charge me for a double -- $7.

Motel 6 goes back much further. They were founded in the 1960s in Santa Barbara. I remember staying in one in 1971 in Lansing, MI. But yes, rooms were $6/night. Gas was $.30/gal too.
I have been booking trips for the rest of the year and honestly $72 is the highest that I have had to pay.
I'll be staying at hotels along Route 66.. Can't get much more small town than that.. I expect i'll be paying, on average, about $75/night. But.. I plan for at least $100.. Those motels tend to bump the rate for the nostalgia factor.
got one in gadsden, AL for a graduation in a couple of weeks. About $89/night.
This post started pre-COVID-19 but I think with the cruise industry, international travel and Canadian travel on hold you are going to see a wicked increased number of Americans traveling domestically this summer. which I think will increase the hotel prices a bit as demand should be higher than usual.
This panic buying of gasoline might thwart our travel plans this summer as we were headed to SC, NC and TN from Northeast Florida traveling by automobile. We have also noticed that we really had to be creative to search out hotels for our July travel as the rates seem a bit higher than usual.
We are noticing NC and SC are getting affected greatly by shortages and one can only wonder if the panic will continue if social media and the news outlets continue to play on Americans pushing the "shortage of gasoline delivery drivers could cause gasoline availability disruptions" news.
Even with the impending possibility of a hurricane in our area we never ever ran out of gasoline in the matter of hours like we did Tuesday. We continue to receive gas shipments but they cannot keep up with the demand.
You can expect the panic gas buying to fizzle out in a week or so, as the supplies are replenished. Unlike with things like toilet paper, folks have only so much room for gasoline (ignoring the crazy few who are putting it in plastic bags and other dangerous containers).
The panic buying is pretty localized, too. Where I am, NH, nothing has changed, not even prices.
